He has become one of the most beloved – and meme’d – vice presidents to ever grace the nation, but on Friday Joe Biden finally had to pass on the torch.
Biden was all smiles as he and wife Dr Jill Biden greeted Mike Pence and his wife Karen at the White House on Friday morning.
With a stately salute, Biden greeted Pence as he and Karen’s car pulled up to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
They both gave Pence and his wife quick kisses on the cheek and then posed for a few pictures, with Jill stealing the spotlight in her bright pink dress.
‘Guys, we gotta get in. The next guy’s coming,’ Biden joked as he referenced the fact that Obama and Michelle were about to greet Donald Trump and wife Melania.
The four families then all came together for a coffee and tea reception before the swearing in ceremony.
Biden and Obama arrived together at the the Capitol to watch their successors take office.
He took his seat next to Obama as he watched the moment Pence laid his hand on a Bible held by Karen and became the next Vice President of the United States.
The Bidens and Pences exited the ceremony together after Trump’s speech to take one last picture with the Obamas and the new First Family.
The inauguration marks a historical moment for Biden, who is out of office for the first time in more than 44 years.
Biden became the sixth-youngest senator in the country’s history when he was first elected in 1972.
He would resign in 2009 after Obama was elected president.
Following the ceremony, train lover Biden took an Amtrak bound for his home in Wilmington, Delaware with Jill.
They will attend a welcome-home ceremony in the town where Biden returned from DC every night to care for his two young sons when he served as a senator.
The Bidens are scheduled to arrive at the Vice President’s namesake train station around 2pm.
Their welcome home ceremony is set to take place on the Wilmington riverfront, and will be attended by the city’s mayor, governor and members of Delaware’s congressional delegation.
Biden is leaving the White House with his highest approval rating since he first assumed the Vice Presidency eight years ago.
At 61 percent, Biden is three points higher than Obama’s 58 percent. It is Biden’s highest favorable rating to date.
Biden has become infamous for his love for ice cream and trains as well as his class clown personality, but he enjoyed a new kind of viral fame after Trump was elected.
Twitter erupted with hilarious memes that showed Biden having the last laugh before handing over power to Trump and Pence following the election.
The memes imagined Biden giving Trump the wrong address to the White House and leaving a fake Obama birth certificate at the Oval Office for him to find, among others.
Twitter users also came up with memes to illustrate Obama and Biden’s close relationship.
That love was on clear display last week when Biden broke down in tears as Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a surprise farewell ceremony.
In a glowing tribute to the 74-year-old, President Obama described him as a ‘lion of American history’ and ‘the best Vice President America has ever had’.
Obama called Biden his ‘brother’ as he presented him with the medal, the highest civilian award in the United States.
