DeMarcus Lawrence sacks Matthew Stafford for the third time today for a loss of 6 yards on first down. Tate catches a pass on second down at the 50 and advances all the way to the Dallas 36-yard-line for a gain of 35.
LeGarrette Blount is handed the ball on first down and he loses 2 yards. Stafford drops a beauty over a Dallas defender, and it’s Tate again catching it down the sideline and getting to the end zone for a 38-yard touchdown.

Lions defense holds on to force red zone field goal
Deonte Thompson returns Sam Martin’s kick to the 21. Dallas is flagged for an illegal block, however, and that penalty will move it back to the 11-yard-line.
Michael Gallup is targeted for an 8-yard completion on first down. Ezekiel Elliott carries the rock on second down and carries it 4 yards for a first down.
Dak Prescott fires to Cole Beasley over the middle and he has his third catch of more than 10 yards, picking up 13 before getting taken down at the 36-yard-line.
Elliott has a huge hole up the middle on the first-down carry and is taken down as he tries to jump over Tracy Walker for a gain of 14 at the 50.
Prescott wanders right with no receivers open and Lions closing in. He steps out-of-bounds for a loss of 1. Rod Smith checks in at running back for the Cowboys and gains 4 yards on a second-down carry to make it third-and-7. Prescott’s throw falls incomplete, but Eli Harold is offsides. It’ll be third-and-2.
Injury: Darius Slay hobbles off the field and calls for a replacement.
That penalty will haunt the Lions, as Elliott puts his head down and gains 7 yards to pick up a fresh set of downs.

Allen Hurns catches a 9-yard pass on second down to make it third-and-1. As is expected, the Cowboys call Elliott’s number, and he fights ahead for a gain of 2 and a first down.
Smith gets the ball next and rushes right for a loss of 1. Prescott goes play-action, and guess who’s open over the middle: Beasley, and his reception gets Dallas down to the 6-yard-line. Detroit needs to keep Dallas out of the end zone.

Jamal Agnew takes a knee on the kickoff.
Matthew Stafford fakes the handoff to LeGarrette Blount and zips a pass to Marvin Jones for a 17-yard gain at the 42-yard-line.
Stafford hands it to Blount on first down and he is swallowed up by former Michigan Wolverine Taco Charlton for a loss of 1. Stafford throws it to the back shoulder of Kenny Golladay, who makes a beautiful catch for a gain of 22 yards on second down that’ll give the Lions a first down at the Dallas 37.
Golden Tate catches a pass over the middle and picks up 3 yards on first down, and second down, Stafford dumps it off to Levine Toilolo for a gain of 4 that’ll make it third-and-3. Stafford will let the clock expire before taking the third-down snap.

Stafford goes back to the reliable Kenny Golladay on third down and he picks up 22 yards and a first down.

Cowboys extend lead to 10
Ezekiel Elliott breaks a few tackles at the line and torches Detroit’s second level of defense on his way to a 41-yard gain that’ll make it first-and-10 for the Cowboys at the Detroit 23-yard-line.
Elliott gets the handoff again on the next play and picks up 9 to get inside the 15-yard-line. Rod Smith picks up the first down with a 3-yard run.
Smith dances at the line trying to find a hole and is eventually tackled for no gain at the Detroit 12. Dak Prescott fires to Smith in the flat on second down and Jarrad Davis makes a huge hit for no gain again. Prescott fires to Cole Beasley for a gain of 9 and Dallas rushes to the line to get off a play on fourth-and-1.

The ball pops out of Elliott’s hands as he forces himself across line-of-scrimmage. The ball is recovered by Dallas in the end zone, but due to some wonky NFL rule, it’ll be first-and-goal from the 1.
Geoff Swaim is wide open in the corner of the end zone on first down and the Cowboys have a two-score lead.

Matthew Stafford and Co. will take over at the 12-yard-line.
Kerryon Johnson gets the handoff on first down and has nowhere to go. He’s taken down for no gain. Tight end Hakeem Valles catches a 6-yard pass on second down. Stafford takes the third-down snap from the gun and is immediately swallowed by a closing pocket before getting taken down by DeMarcus Lawrence for a loss of 6.

Dallas takes Sam Martin’s kick for a touchback.
Ezekiel Elliott gets 4 yards on first down, but there’s a flag. It’s a holding penalty on Detroit, which’ll give the Cowboys a first down.
Elliott slips on his cut at the line on a first-down run and is taken down for no gain.
Injury update: Tavon Austin has returned for Dallas.
Dak Prescott fakes the handoff to Elliott and then dumps it off to his running back, who powers ahead for a gain of 12 to give Dallas a first down at the 46.
Prescott’s first-down throw is incomplete, but Quandre Diggs is called for holding on the opposite side of the field. It’ll be first-and-10 at the Detroit 49.
Elliott carries it for 3 yards on first down. Detroit sniffs out a screen pass on second down and forces an errant pass that falls incomplete. Devon Kennard is called for defensive holding on the opposite side of the field. Not ideal.
Tavon Austin takes the jet sweep for 7 yards before getting out-of-bounds at the Detroit 34. Prescott takes it out of the shotgun and gives to Rod White for a run of 8 yards.
Elliott is called for an illegal block on a first-down completion to Austin and it’ll be first-and-20 at the 36.
Prescott throws to Cole Beasley over the middle, and Diggs makes a good play in coverage to force an incompletion. Elliott goes for a 2-yard gain on second down. Prescott’s pocket collapses on him and Devon Kennard wraps up the Dallas quarterback for a 14-yard loss that’ll take the Cowboys out of field goal range.
That’s Kennard’s fourth sack of the season.

Lions pick up field goal late in second quarter
Jamal Agnew calls for a fair catch in the end zone.
LeGarrette Blount picks up 1 yard up the middle on first down and goes to the right for a gain of a couple on second down.
Kerryon Johnson has just three carries since gashing the Cowboys for 32 yards on Detroit’s first play from scrimmage.
Blount’s second-down run is called back for a face mask penalty that’ll make it second-and-22. Matthew Stafford drops a dime over the shoulder of Marvin Jones for a gain of 34 that’ll make it first-and-10 at the Detroit 47.
Blount takes it again on the next play for a gain of 3 and Johnson carries it for 3 more on second down to get the Lions into Dallas territory. Stafford gets it to Golden Tate quickly for a first down that’ll give the Lions a first down on a play similar to the skinny post thrown to Marvin Jones a few drives back. Once again, it’s called a catch, but Dallas will challenge. This one will be tougher to overturn, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the catch called back.
After further review, the call is upheld. It’ll be first-and-10 at the Dallas 41-yard-line.
Stafford rolls out on bootleg play-action and has a gaggle of Dallas defenders in his face immediately. He scampers out-of-bounds for a gain of 3. Stafford avoids pressure again on second down and completes it to Luke Willson for a gain of 6 to make it third-and-1. Stafford sneaks it across the line for a 2-yard gain to move the chains.
Detroit calls a sweep play for Agnew and he gets around the end and up the field for a gain of 17 to get in the red zone at the 13.

Matthew Stafford fakes the handoff to LeGarrette Blount and fires to Golden Tate, who’s wrapped up by nearly the entire Cowboys defense on his way to a 3-yard loss. Theo Riddick catches the check-down pass on second down for a gain of 2 to make it third-and-11. Stafford faces pressure on third down, whips it to Kenny Golladay on a crossing route, and the Lions receiver reaches the edge for a gain of 15 to move the chains.
Blount runs over a defender on his way to a 7-yard gain on first down. Stafford quickly gets it out on second down to Marvin Jones for a gain of 4 that’ll give the Lions a first down.
Injury update: T.J. Lang is out for the remainder of the game with a concussion.
Dallas is challenging that Jones came down with the catch. The call will most likely be overturned.
And it is. It’ll be third-and-3.
Stafford takes it in the gun and gets it to Tate easily for a gain of 4 at the Detroit 44.
Stafford throws it to Jones on a skinny post on first down and the pass bounces off Jones’ face mask. Riddick gets the carry on second down for a gain of 7. Stafford throws to Tate, who spins away from an immediate defender and goes all the way down the sideline for a 45-yard touchdown.

Elliott picks up a yard on first down. Prescott telegraphs his second-down throw to Allen Hurns and Darius Slay is able to jump the route and knock it away. Prescott tries to beat Slay again with a third-down throw to Michael Gallup; his throw goes out of the end zone.

Stafford trips after taking the snap, but manages to toss it to LeGarrette Blount. He carries it up the middle for a gain of 3. Blount gets the carry again on second down and gains another yard.

For the first time this year, Kerryon Johnson is in the backfield for the opening snap. He gets the ball on first down and slices the Dallas defense for a 32-yard gain before going out-of-bounds at the Dallas 43.
Johnson carries it up the middle again on first down for a gain of 4. The rookie back is met in the backfield on second down and is wrapped up behind the line for a loss of 1 to make it third-and-7. Matthew Stafford takes it in the gun and Luke Willson can’t reel in a high throw in the flat. At the 40-yard-line, Detroit is just out of Prater’s range; it’ll send out the punt team.
Detroit is called for a false start on the punt.

Big drama in Big D
The Lions’ last trip to Dallas ended with a 42-21 one-sided defeat on Monday Night Football.
Before that, however, Detroit played a couple of memorable games in the Lone Star State: The controversial 2014 NFC Wild Card Game, which was flipped on its head as a result of a picked-up pass interference flag and sent the Lions packing in a 24-20 Cowboys win, and a 13-point fourth quarter comeback that advanced Detroit to a 4-0 record in 2011.
