Authorities in Mexico’s Veracruz state on Saturday said at least two people were killed when Hurricane Katia made landfall overnight. Gov. Miguel Angel Yunes said the pair died in a mudslide. The hurricane did not appear to cause any major damage in the region, he said, though some rivers had risen to near flood levels.
The hurricane, which has since been downgraded to a tropical depression, struck just after more than 60 people were killed in an 8.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked the southern coast late Thursday. Authorities updated the death toll in that disaster on Saturday, saying at least 61 people have been confirmed dead. Half of those killed were in Juchitan, where about one-third of homes were destroyed. Residents were seen Saturday dragging sleeping bags outside to spend their second night sleeping on sidewalks.
