Boca Raton police are investigating reports of gun shots fired at Boca Raton’s Town Center mall Sunday afternoon.
“There is no active shooter at this time,” Boca Police tweeted at 4:15 p.m. Police were conducting a search of the mall.
Boca Fire Rescue said one person suffered a gunshot wound, according to WPEC-Ch. 12.
Boca Raton Police and other law enforcement converged on the mall after reports of an active shooter. A shopper in the parking lot reported seeing officers with rifles going into Macy’s.
Police and mall officials have not confirmed what the situation is, but they are “currently conducting an active search of the area,” according to Boca Raton Police.
Shoppers described scenes filled panic after hearing gunshots and others shouting “active shooter.”
Heather Tebbutt was shopping in Pink when she said she heard a gunshot.
“I heard a quick ‘pop,’ screaming and then a stampede,” she said, still sporting a sweater she was trying on in the fitting room.
She said the store employees told her to stay in the fitting room and not to come out. She was then moved to a back room with about 20 of the store’s employees and other shoppers before being evacuated.
Tebbutt said she wished malls took more safety precautions, like putting metal detectors in their entrances.
