Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy will begin his search for a new defensive coordinator on a familiar note.
Two days after dismissing Mike Nolan, the team will interview Joe Whitt Jr. on Sunday, a source said. McCarthy values trust and a strong working relationship when retooling his staff. Whitt, the Atlanta Falcons’ secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator, worked under McCarthy on the Green Bay Packers from 2008 to 2018.
The interview will be conducted via video conference call.
A number of coaching changes are coming to Dallas. Some became official Friday when Nolan and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula were fired. Based on in-season performance, additional assistants could be on the move.
Identifying a defensive coordinator takes first priority.
While Whitt has yet to be a defensive coordinator, McCarthy holds his coaching abilities in high regard. The 42-year-old is still under contract with the Falcons, however, so unless the Falcons allow him to depart, he will be available to Dallas only if accepting a promotion over his current title.
